A monster wormed its way into Brittney Newman’s house two years ago in February, the devil who extorted sex from her in exchange for child support was back but still not satisfied.

Her jealous ex now wanted her life.

On the way to her basement apartment in Mississauga, Abdiljibar Mahamoud bought a knife from Square One and then, in front of her two young sons, beheaded her mother and rested her head on her chest. He gutted her guts.

And then he photographed his barbaric brutality with his phone and practically bragged about it, uploading it to his Linkedin account with the caption, “Can’t talk about my ops.” They are dead.”

What kind of man would do that to the mother of his children? What kind of man would do that to someone?

His only ounce of kindness was to plead guilty to second-degree murder and save his children and Newman’s family from a trial.

As relatives wiped away tears, an emotional Supreme Court Justice, Bruce Durno, accepted a joint submission and automatically sentenced Mahamoud, 29, to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 18 years, calling the femicide a “wild cruelty”.

“Any domestic violence is very serious and clear messages need to be sent,” Durno said. “Where that offense is murder, that message is reinforced.”

In 2020, police said that of the 18 homicides in the Peel area that year, five were related to intimate partner violence. Newman, 25, was one of those grim statistics.

She had lived with Mahamoud until they split in 2018 and moved into their own apartment with their young boys. In their victim statements, her family described Newman as a great mother who took exceptional care of her eldest, who was 5 at the time and is non-verbal and autistic, and her three-year-old, who clung to her “like glue.”

Loving, shy and gentle, she seemed to thrive after finally being able to leave Mahamoud. But she couldn’t really escape.

Newman went to court to get child support, but Mahamoud evaded payment, Durno said in his ruling. He told her he would only give her money for her boys if she made an informal — and not court-ordered — agreement: she would have to agree to sex a few times a week.

“Though she did not respond to the original proposal, she eventually accepted its terms,” the judge said. “That was because she needed money to support the children and at times had no money for the bus ride for parent-teacher interviews.”

Newman was trapped.

But she told him she wanted to move on and see other people and her deal fell through when she was serious about dating someone else.

“Mr. Mahamoud did not accept that Brittney could see other men around the children,” he said.

And so he killed her within 11 minutes of getting off the bus.

Her landlord heard an argument and the children were crying. Then he heard screams. When no one answered her locked door, he called 911.

Peel Regional Police came to find the gruesome scene where Newman’s traumatized boys stood next to her headless body.

Mahamoud was quick to confess, stating he was angry that Newman had broken her sex-for-child support contract and that he was jealous that she was seeing other men.

“You have to kill your ops (opponents),” he said.

Mahamoud, who has been hospitalized twice in the past for a psychotic illness, told police he knew his actions were morally wrong, the judge said, and decided not to pursue a criminally responsible defense.

What a trail of pain this vicious killer left behind.

His orphan children were marked for life, the judge said. The youngest son is still re-enacting the horrific murder, saying his father hurt his mother and painted her red. The non-verbal child uses Google Earth to find the crime scene and collapses at school, sobbing inconsolably.

“It’s haunting,” Durno said.

And the final humiliation of this heartbreaking case? These poor boys still haven’t received help to watch a monster kill their mother – they’ve been on a waiting list for more than two years.
