DETROIT (WWJ) – From the opening riff of Jack White’s National Anthem performance on the Detroit Tigers’ opening day at Comerica Park, listeners couldn’t help but feel that the rocker’s rendition reminded them of a certain Bikini Bottom.

The southwest Detroit native’s reaction to The Star Spangled Banner on Friday afternoon was widespread, with some fans praising the band for a unique, classic rock vibe reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix.

“Wow that was so good and I’m a Cleveland fan,” one social media user wrote.

“Just rad,” said another commenter.

Others definitely picked up on the Surfer Rock sound that reminded fans of the music used on the popular kids’ TV show SpongeBob SquarePants.

“What’s in SpongeBob SquarePants?” wrote one Twitter user.

“Bikini bottom type beat,” another fan commented.

The 12-time Grammy winner and his band played an instrumental version of the national anthem to a nearly sold-out crowd of thousands as fans were welcomed to the ballpark for the first time in two years since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“You already know Jack White wouldn’t miss Detroit’s biggest party! The Detroit Tigers said online when the organization announced White would perform on Opening Day.

A fan told WWJ reporter Ryan Marshall that he thought the anthem should have been sung.

“Are you going to play the guitar? said Nicholas Green of Port Huron. “I don’t even play guitar and I probably could have done that. I mean, I just would have liked a little more.”

White kicks off the first show of his nationwide tour Friday night at the Masonic Temple in support of his latest album fear of dawn, the first of two complete solo discs. fear of dawn falls on Friday as his second album, Enter alive in paradisedebuts on July 22.
