In the 1990s and 2000s, Nickelodeon was home to some of the most beloved animated shows of all time. As said by Ginger was one of them. The series was created by the team behind Rugrats and followed the smart but socially awkward Ginger Foutley and her friends. The show was iconic for several reasons, including its catchy theme song.
‘As Told By Ginger’ was a beloved Nickelodeon show
As said by Ginger premiered at Nickelodeon in October 2000 and in many ways was aimed at tweens who grew up on Rugrats in the 90s. Ginger and her friends Dodie and Macie stand side by side as they go through the trials and tribulations of college. Lucky for Ginger, the most popular girl in school, the blonde and beautiful Courtney, loved her and often included her in her plans.
The series also dealt with many deeper themes that other children’s shows have never addressed. For example, staff and students at Ginger’s school think she is suicidally depressed after writing a disturbing poem that worries them. She goes through an emotional breakdown in another episode and has to undergo surgery for appendicitis on her own. And in another episode, Ginger was confronted with a coffee and caffeine addiction, which actually sent a message about drugs and losing control of the habits.
‘As Told By Ginger’ Was Unique From Other Animated Shows
Most cartoons such as Rugrats, the wild thorns, and Sponge Bob SquarePants are entirely episodic in nature; each episode is independent of each other and there is no real storyline running through the seasons. As said by Ginger reversed this formula from the start.
Unlike almost every other animated show – for kids and adults alike – the characters from As said by Ginger changed outfits in each episode. While it took a lot more time and money at the end of the animation, it made the show feel like the real world, as it’s unrealistic to imagine people wearing the same clothes every day.
Likewise, the series has had satisfying character development and other easy-to-follow changes. Season after season, for example, Ginger’s friend Darren has his orthodontic headgear removed, making him a popular kid at school.
