Have you ever wondered which fine art themed episode The simpsons would be like? An artist based in Ontario, Canada shared his vision through fun mixes between famous paintings and characters from The Simpsons. Known simply as @fine_art_simpsons on Instagram, the artist replaces historical figures in fine art paintings with beloved figures like Homer Simpson, Ned Flanders, Edna Krabappel and Milhouse Van Houten. Suddenly Bart is Jackson Pollock spilling paint all over the place, Grandpa and Mona are their own take on the iconic american gothic, and Kent Brockman is the Norman Rockwell “undecided voter” who chooses between Kang and Kodos.
The artist began to create the well titled Fine Arts Simpsons series in 2020. âI thought it would be funny to combine The kiss and Hokusai Big wave with familiar scenes from The simpsonsThe artist told My Modern Met. âA friend saw them and convinced me to create an account to show them off. Since then, I have learned more about fine art than ever during my years in fine art school and continue to have a really fun finding visual and thematic similarities between classical art and my favorite cartoon.
Each scene is a brilliant blend of art history and an astute knowledge of The simpsons, which indicates very clearly that the artist is a super fan. The Instagram account is the place to be for those sitting in the middle of a Venn diagram of The Simpsons and art history, as it winks at both in a clever way. For example, the artist takes the pool scene from David Hockey in Greater splash and adds a little Bart who is looking out the window in the back. For avid Simpsons fans, this is a clear reference to the Bart of Darkness episode, in which Bart breaks his leg and starts spying on neighbors from his bedroom. In terms of art history, the work of Vincent van Gogh Night cafe, the surrealist dreamlike landscapes of Salvador Dalà and those of Edward Hopper Nightjars make appearances among a long list of other masterpieces.
